IRAS CALL-FOR-PAPERS: SPECIAL ISSUE ON PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION IN POLARIZED DEMOCRACIES

Diogo Pereira,

The International Review of Administrative Sciences (IRAS) is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for its upcoming Special Issue titled Public Administration in Polarized Democracies: Theoretical Perspectives, Empirical Insights, Practical Implications.

This Special Issue, guest-edited by Professor Michael Bauer (Florence School of Transnational Governance, European University Institute), addresses the systemic crisis facing modern democracies. Polarization, populism, and illiberal governance have significant implications for public administration, bureaucratic resilience, and the social contract between citizens and the state.

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit abstracts exploring themes such as:

  • Causes and Impact of      Polarization and Populism: Examining their influence on public administration and relationships between bureaucrats, politicians, and citizens.
  • Effects of Illiberal      Governance: Addressing challenges and ethical dilemmas faced by bureaucratic institutions under illiberal pressures.
  • Strengthening      Bureaucratic Resilience: Exploring strategies to fortify governance systems against democratic backsliding.
  • Comparative      Perspectives: Analyzing the effects of polarization and governance reforms across different contexts.

The European Group for Public Administration (EGPA) invites scholars and practitioners to propose new initiatives for its 2027 Annual Conference, taking place at Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary, from 24 to 27 August 2027. EGPA provides a European forum for public administration scholars and practitioners to present research, exchange perspectives and develop collaborations across public administration, public management and public policy. The call welcomes proposals for three formats: Permanent Study Groups (PSGs), Ad Hoc Groups (AHGs) and Specialised Panels (SPs). EGPA looks forward to welcoming new initiatives, perspectives and research communities that will enrich its 2027 Annual Conference and contribute to the development of public administration research across Europe and beyond.

The conference introduced a call for papers across fourteen thematic tracks and an interactive programme to help participants navigate its activities.

Professor Manuel Pedro Rodríguez Bolívar, Editor-in-Chief of the International Review of Administrative Sciences (IRAS), is included in the latest Stanford–Elsevier database of the world’s top-cited scientists, recognising the sustained citation impact of his research in political science and public administration.
